Cummins ESN: where to find the engine serial number and how to read the dataplate

5 min read admin_dev

Buying a part for a Cummins engine and the supplier asks for the “ESN”? There is a good reason. The ESN (Engine Serial Number) is the only identifier that lets you match parts to a specific engine, not just to the model. Two QSB6.7 engines built in the same year can have different injectors, a different water pump and a different ECM β€” because they went into different machines with different factory configurations. This guide shows where to find the ESN, how to read the dataplate and what to do when it is illegible.

What is the ESN?

The ESN is an 8-digit serial number assigned to every Cummins engine at the factory. In Cummins systems it is linked to the full factory specification of that unit: the list of parts it was built with, the power rating and the history of any design changes. That is why giving the ESN gets you parts that are certain to fit β€” without guessing from the machine model and year.

Where to find the dataplate β€” step by step

Step 1: Check the gear housing

On most Cummins engines the metal dataplate is located on the gear housing β€” at the front of the engine, on the fan side. On the popular B and C series (4BT, 6BT, 6CT, QSB, QSC) look for it on the left side of the gear housing or on the upper part of the block on the fuel injection pump side.

Step 2: Check the valve cover and the block

On some units (depending on series and year of manufacture) the plate is fitted to the valve cover or to the side of the block. On industrial engines installed in machines access can be difficult β€” it is often easier to reach in with a phone and flashlight and take a photo “blind” than to search with a mirror.

Step 3: No plate? Look for the number stamped on the block

Dataplates get painted over, removed during a rebuild or become unreadable after years of work. The ESN is, however, also stamped directly on the engine block β€” the location depends on the series, but most often you will find it on a machined pad of the block near the gear housing or the intake manifold. The stamping is often dirty: wipe it clean and look at it from an angle.

Step 4: Check the machine documents

The engine ESN often appears in the documentation of the machine it is installed in (specification, service invoice, inspection reports). It is a good quick source, but for more expensive parts it is still worth confirming the number on the plate β€” the engine may have been replaced in the meantime.

What else is on the dataplate β€” and what CPL means

Besides the ESN, the dataplate usually shows:

  • Engine model (e.g. QSB6.7, QSC8.3, QSL9),
  • CPL (Control Parts List) β€” the configuration number for critical parts: injectors, pump, pistons, injection settings. Two engines of the same model with a different CPL may need different fuel system parts,
  • Rated power and speed (HP / RPM),
  • Date of manufacture and emissions certification data.

When ordering fuel system parts or engine accessories, give the ESN and, if possible, the CPL as well. These two numbers prevent most mistakes, returns and downtime.

Why we ask for your ESN β€” how parts matching works in practice

When you send us the ESN, we check the exact configuration of your engine in the factory catalogues and select the part number that fits that unit β€” including superseded numbers (Cummins regularly changes part numbers when a design is revised). As a result:

  • you will not buy an injector that “almost fits” your CPL,
  • you will know whether the part has a newer replacement number (often with a different price and availability),
  • for parts ordered in for you we give a realistic lead time straight away β€” stock items ship within 24–48 h, items ordered in typically take 7–10 working days.

If you already know the part number, just type it into the search bar on eurodieselshop.com β€” it searches by SKU and by alternative numbers. If you only have the ESN, send a photo of the dataplate via WhatsApp +48 728 626 259 or through the contact form β€” we will match the part for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ESN the same as the machine serial number? No. The serial number of an excavator or generator set identifies the machine; the ESN identifies the engine. To match engine parts you need the ESN.

The engine has been rebuilt β€” is the ESN still valid? Yes, the ESN stays with the engine for life. Keep in mind, though, that parts from a different specification may have been fitted during the rebuild β€” so in unusual cases we also ask for a photo of the old part.

I cannot find the plate or the stamping. What now? Send us photos of the engine (front, injection pump side, gear housing area) and the number of the old part you are replacing. In most cases that is enough for an unambiguous match.

Summary

You will find the ESN on the dataplate (most often on the gear housing) or stamped on the block. Together with the CPL it is the surest way to the right part β€” especially in the fuel system. Take a photo of the plate today and keep the number with the machine documents: when a breakdown happens, you will order parts without guesswork.

Have your ESN to hand? Send it to us β€” phone/WhatsApp +48 728 626 259 or the contact form β€” and we will prepare a quote with a realistic lead time.
